New m15x from Alienware with Core i7 CPUs

October 6, 2009 by Berg divider image

m15xThe Alienware m15x is back, and this time it’s packing the latest Core i7 mobile processor from Intel. Dell releasing the new Alienware coincides exactly with the launch of Intel’s new mobile CPU lineup, making the m15x one of the first laptops based on the platform.Besides the new CPUs, the m15x is in every aspect a downscaled version of the already released m17x gaming laptop – and it’s almost as heavy, weighing in at 9lbs (4kg). In other words this is not an overly portable package despite the reduction of the frame, being at least 2lbs heavier than the average 15-inch laptop.

A heavy beast

With the added weight comes added performance however; the m15x refresh comes with a choice of brand new mobile quad-core Core i7 processors from Intel, and with the included Hyperthreading feature these CPUs can handle up to eight threads simultaneously, making for an extremely efficient machine for multitasking.

The clock rates on the new CPUs sound a bit low. There are three variants to choose from – 1.6GHz, 1.73GHz and 2GHz – but when two of the cores are inactive, Intel’s “Turbo Boost” kicks in and overclocks the processors to 2.8GHz, 3.06GHz and 3.2GHz respectively.

Compared to the larger sibling m17x, the m15x does not have an option for dual graphics cards in SLI mode, which is understandable due to the space restrictions. The most powerful alternative at the time of writing is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M. Neither is there a RAID option with dual hard drives, but it’s possible to get a screen with full HD 1920×1080 resolution should you want one. Otherwise the standard configuration is a 1600×900 LCD.
