Asus N82J – A 14-Inch Quad-Core Powerhouse

April 4, 2010 by Berg divider image

Asus has officially introduced a new 14-inch model called N82J that should appeal to gamers looking for powerful specs in a svelte package. Interesting features include Nvidia Optimus hybrid power, USB3 and a quad-core i7 CPU. Despite the specs, it’s not an overly large machine, and a weight of 2.3kg (5lbs) with an 8-cell battery.

You can get the N82J with an Intel Core i7-720QM processor (quad-core, 1.6GHz and up to 2.8GHz via Turbo Boost, 6MB cache) which is currently one of the top mobile Core i7 CPUs. Alternatively you can opt for a more modest Core i3-330M (dual-core, 2.13GHz, 3MB cache) if you want to get it for cheap. In addition, you can configure it with up to 8GB DDR3 1066MHz RAM, up to a 640GB 5400RPM or 500GB 7200RPM hard drive.

The 1366 x 768 screen, on the other hand, is probably a let-down for some, and the upper mid-range Nvidia GT335M is not a top-tier card. It should still be able to cope with newer games on medium settings, and considering the screen you should be able to run them at native resolution with no problems.

With the 8-cell battery and the Nvidia Optimus technology in the Asus N82J, it should be capable of pretty decent battery life. Optimus automatically switches between the integrated and dedicated graphics card. This is an improvement on the old Hybrid graphics technology in that it works automatically – switching to the GT335M when gaming, and back to integrated graphics afterwards save power.
